Occasionally I photograph things that aren’t Detroit, and aren’t Mount Evans. I made these images years ago, back when I was a full-time photographer. I made the photos for the fun of it, not for an assignment, or with any intention of making money from them. Even when, or maybe especially when, you are a full-time photographer, you need to do photography for yourself as well. Doing only paying work, which for me included architecture, interiors, product, and lifestyle, can be soul crushing. If you aren’t doing something for you, it becomes just another job. Photographing pillows and slippers was way better than working in a cubicle, but it was still boring. Abandoned houses, small churches, and sometimes flowers, were my may of enjoying photography, while being a full-time photographer.
